Project Description
Signify A5 Desk Lamp Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Collaboration is a high-performance task lighting product designed for modern professionals who require wide, glare-free illumination for long-hour focused work. Developed in collaboration with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, the product integrates polarized optical engineering, durable mechanical articulation and performance-driven identity. Its injection-molded PMMA optics use per-LED concave reflectors, micro-textures and indirect lighting to deliver uniform, directed coverage not achievable by standard sheet-based diffusers. The desk lamp’s carbon-fiber textured body, precision-machined joints and ambient “ultra-teal” up light express the racing team’s advanced material culture in a workspace context. A5 balances professional performance with eye comfort, supporting visual wellbeing, efficiency and creative focus in contemporary desk environments.
User Value
A5 delivers value to users through optical comfort, mechanical precision and a unique emotional connection. Key features include:
• Polarized wide-angle optics with per-LED reflectors enabling glare-free coverage for long work periods
• Six-point articulation for precise, repeatable light positioning
• Slide touch bar for stepless brightness and CCT control, plus auto-dimming based on ambient sensing
• Ambient natural uplight to reduce contrast-induced eye fatigue
• Carbon-fiber textured base, silver accents and ultra-teal ambient strip expressing a performance identity
Functionally, A5 addresses a real gap between professional task lighting needs (uniformity, anti-glare, wide coverage) and the limitations of typical desk lamps.
Emotionally, it introduces the adrenaline and precision of Formula One into creative workspaces, providing motivational value.
Aesthetically, it blends technical rigor with softness (squircle head, gentle contours) to communicate care and wellbeing.
The product demonstrates in-depth thinking in optics, ergonomic interaction, material use, visual psychology and workplace culture.
Business Performance
A5 supports business goals across brand building, category extension and premium market positioning.
• Brand Awareness: The collaboration with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team reinforces Signify’s leadership in performance lighting and generates visibility beyond the lighting industry.
• Sales & Marketing: As a premium SKU with differentiated optics and mechanical articulation, A5 expands desk lamp offerings into high-value professional and enthusiast markets.
• Value Communication: The project connects lighting engineering with the global Formula One cultural asset, providing strong storytelling for retail, online sales and community marketing.
Expected business outcomes occur within 1–3 years through direct sales, e-commerce, F1 fan communities, design channels and workplace-oriented platforms. The design demonstrates how lighting can intersect with sports culture and technology, strengthening Signify’s innovation narrative. Early evaluations and design media exposure indicate strong interest from tech-oriented consumers and motorsport followers.
Social Impact
A5 contributes social value by enhancing visual comfort and supporting sustainable work habits in long-hour digital environments.
Its optical system reduces glare, shadows and contrast-induced visual stress, addressing increasing rates of digital eye fatigue among knowledge workers. The project also elevates awareness of high-quality lighting as a health-supportive element of modern work culture.
In cultural terms, it introduces Formula One engineering aesthetics into everyday life, bridging niche performance culture with mainstream creativity and professional identity.
From an industry perspective, A5 pushes task lighting beyond basic illumination toward precision optical engineering and user-centered ergonomics.
Sustainable impact includes the use of in-mold textured carbon fiber reinforcement rather than coatings or films, reducing secondary processes and improving recyclability, as well as paper-based packaging to minimize plastic waste.
The overall result supports wellbeing, material responsibility and cultural enrichment.
Team Structure
The project was executed by an interdisciplinary Signify team including industrial designers, mechanical and optical engineers, UI/UX designers, product managers and marketing specialists.
Industrial design led form development, mechanical articulation, brand identity integration and CMF with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team.
Optical engineering developed polarized lenses, micro-texture diffusion, and indirect light distribution.
Mechanical engineering delivered durable joints and CNC-enhanced components for long-term articulation stability.
Product management coordinated consumer insights, positioning and collaboration scope.
Marketing prepared communication assets and fan-community narratives.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team collaborated on identity alignment, CMF direction and brand validation.
External lighting specialists contributed to visual comfort and workplace ergonomics evaluation.
Flow
Innovations include the polarized L-shaped optical architecture, injection-molded PMMA lenses with per-LED reflectors, honeycomb micro-textures, ambient visual-comfort up-light and high-precision mechanical joints.
The process began with research into office lighting ergonomics, glare metrics, digital eye fatigue, and motorsport identity.
Multiple optical prototypes were tested to compare sheet-based diffusers versus injection-molded modules for glare and uniformity.
User feedback guided UI refinements such as stepless slide dimming and auto-dimming logic.
CMF development involved in-mold carbon fiber texture trials for scratch resistance and authentic racing material expression.
Joint durability was validated through repeated articulation tests.
The result exceeded expectations by achieving both F1 performance identity and workplace eye-care value.
Project Investment
We don’t provide financial information or budgets. The development time is approx. 9 months.
Project Achievements
The project aimed to introduce a high-performance, glare-free desk lamp that improves focus and eye comfort while expressing Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One identity.
Results aligned with expectations: A5 delivered differentiated optical performance, durable mechanical adjustability and a recognizable racing-derived CMF language.
The initial inspiration came from translating Formula One engineering and material culture to desk-scale productivity. Unexpected achievements include strong emotional resonance among creative professionals and motorsport fans, cross-category marketing opportunities and expanded brand storytelling for both Signify and the F1 team. The strategy combined “optical performance + ergonomic control + cultural identity,” and the final product demonstrates a coherent link between strategy and outcome in both user benefit and brand impact.
